Khaou’s film, the Chinese-British filmmaker’s first since 2014’s “Lilting,” unfolds in dulcet, almost ASMR-inducing tones, but that doesn’t mean “Monsoon” lacks for big emotional impact. Kit (Golding) is a British-Vietnamese man returning to his birth country for the first time in three decades, and he’s lost in translation. Unable to speak the language, and now spiritually disconnected from his origins, Kit journeys first to Saigon, and then Hanoi, in search of a place to scatter his family’s ashes....

Let’s get this one out of the way: Despite appearing in marketing materials for “Morbius” (and appearing second-billed on the film’s IMDBb page, likely the product of some overeager fans), Michael Keaton does not actually appear in the vast majority of Daniel Espinosa’s film. In fact, depending on your stance on post-credits scenes, the beloved actor (and star of both Marvel and DC properties) doesn’t appear in the film at all....

Some “Sandman” fans took issue with Gaiman for casting Howell-Baptiste, a Black actress, in a role that is visually depicted as a white character in the source material. One fan noted on Twitter that Howell-Baptiste’s casting was irksome because Gaiman doesn’t “give a fuck” about standing by his original work. Other “Sandman” fans criticized the casting of non-binary actor Park as Desire, even though Gaiman wrote the character of Desire as non-binary in the comic books....

The series takes place over several points in time, differentiated only by the characters’ wig changes. Tallulah “Tully” Hart (Katherine Heigl) and Kate Mularkey (Sarah Chalke) have been best friends since they were teens, when Tully and her hippie mom Cloud (Beau Garrett) moved in across the street on, you guessed it, Firefly Lane. As they grow into adults Tully and Kate make goals to become journalists, though where Tully succeeds Kate falls into a relationship with her boss, Johnny Ryan (Ben Lawson)....

Netflix’s co-CEO and content chief Ted Sarandos made the announcement in a statement that celebrates the company’s deep ties to the Canadian entertainment industry, whether creating a new spin on a Canadian classic with “Anne with an E” or launching homegrown talent like Maitreyi Ramikrishnan in “Never Have I Ever.” “Canada is an amazingly diverse country and growing our presence locally will help us share more authentically Canadian stories with the world, whether through the development of original content or through co-production and licensing opportunities....

Also announced is a spinoff from Pixar’s “Up,” “Dug Days,” featuring Bob Peterson. It’ll premiere in fall 2021. Other series coming up include a “Cars” franchise spinoff show, and Pixar’s first official long-form animated series, “Win or Lose,” about a coed middle school softball team. That debuts in fall 2023. Coming up on the features side is director Enrico Casarosa’s “Luca,” announced for a date of June 18, 2021. The project marks Pixar’s 24th feature....

The week-long BAM retrospective, “Cinema Is Sorcery: The Films of Nina Menkes,” features new restorations of “The Bloody Child” (4K by by The Academy Film Archive and The Film Foundation) which premiered at NYFF last fall, and “Magdalena Viraga,” (2K by Arbelos Films) which makes its New York City premiere with the museum. “Magdalena Viraga” was filmed in bars and hotels in East Los Angeles, following the inner life of a prostitute, played by Tinka Menkes, who is imprisoned for killing her pimp....
