Updated for February 8: The Oscar nominations are out and Disney dominated with “Encanto” and “Raya and the Last Dragon,” and Pixar’s “Luca.” This marks the first time that Disney has had two in contention since 2016 and the first time it’s had three since 2012. The other two slots were taken by “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” (Netflix/Sony), and the acclaimed documentary “Flee” (Neon/Participant), which also scored historic noms in the doc and international categories....

But Darius Marder’s “Sound of Metal,” in which Riz Ahmed portrays Ruben, a heavy-metal drummer losing his hearing, is the favorite to win the Oscar for its complexity and detail. Although the film was snubbed at the MPSE Golden Reel Awards, it rebounded to take the CAS sound mixing prize. This is a film about sound because of the way it explores deafness as a way of experiencing sound and vibration....

While the “Wonder Woman” series was perhaps the buzziest pilot going into production for the 2011-2012 TV season, NBC passed on the series. It was a shock to comic book fans at the time, but word later got out the pilot was a near disaster and the network made the right call but not picking it up to series. Pascal would find much better luck with “Wonder Woman” nine years later in Patty Jenkins’ sequel, but he reflected on his first go-around with the comic book franchise in a recent interview with Variety....

Emmy winner Matthew Rhys reprises his detective role for HBO’s “Perry Mason,” with the second season premiering two years after the reboot premiered. Per the official synopsis, months after the Dodson case has come to an end, the scion of a powerful oil family is brutally murdered. When the DA goes to the city’s Hoovervilles to pinpoint the most obvious of suspects, Perry, Della, and Paul find themselves at the center of a case that will uncover far-reaching conspiracies and force them to reckon with what it truly means to be guilty....

“It doesn’t matter how much you put into something, no matter how old you are, because you should always expect the possibility that your effort will be undervalued,” she said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “But you can’t really take that personally. It’s just the way it is.” In the film, which won the directing prize at the world premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, Blank stars as a fictionalized version of herself — a once-promising playwright nearing the age of 40, whose career has stalled, and now teaches drama to high school students, as she tries to come to terms with her own unfulfilled professional accomplishments....

The scare quotes around the character’s name come from the fact that it’s hard in print to distinguish the alien of the title from the human body which he inhabits for a majority of the show. With the erstwhile Harry’s corpse literally sits chilling in the downstairs freezer of a remote cabin, the alien that assumes his form is left to take over the duties of town doctor for the tucked-away mountain community of Patience, Colorado....
