Not only is animation a medium that crosses a wide range of genres, but so many of our earliest memories in front of a screen are tied to an animated series, short, or special, and that impermeable nostalgia can be difficult to penetrate with typical critical tools like reason, logic, and other objective criteria....

Results usually range from good to strong, enhancing their awards profiles. This year, “The Fabelmans” (Universal) jumped from four theaters to 638 and grossed $2.2 million for three days ($3.1 million for the five days), for a per-theater average just below $3,500. Only Laura Poitras’ acclaimed documentary “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” (Neon) stood out among limited debuts. It’s been mostly downhill for specialized films since the early October green shoots of “TÁR” (Focus), “Till” (United Artists), and “Triangle of Sadness” (Neon)....

One half of the splitting duo (and it’s never clear if she and her now-ex-roommate were ever quite romantic) is Mara (Henriette Confurius), whose odd tactile obsessions puncture the entire film and are immediately announced in the opening scene: she is oddly soothed by the sight and sound of a jackhammer. She hangs around in the wings, picking at a herpes blister, as her roommate Lisa (Liliane Amuat) prepares to move out to a place of her own — albeit one in the same building....

Perhaps all you need to know about Alex Dall is this: physics is her worst subject, and yet she is a physics major. While the origins of Alex’s wild bids for academic excellence will eventually be explained away in Lauren Hadaway’s tense, often electrifying feature debut “The Novice,” the first-time director opts to plunge both her audience and her film into Alex’s frenetic world almost immediately, only much later pausing for some necessary breaths....

The Oscar-winning Rylance (“Bridge of Spies”) plays Leonard, an English tailor who used to craft bespoke suits on London’s famed Savile Row. He heads to Chicago after a personal tragedy, where he operates a tailor shop in a rough part of town, making beautiful clothes for the only people in the neighborhood who can afford them: a family of gangsters. Also starring are O’Brien (“The Maze Runner”), Zoey Deutch (“Set It Up”), Johnny Flynn (“Emma”), Simon Russell Beale (“The Hollow Crown”), and Nikki Amuka-Bird (“NW”)....

Per the film’s official synopsis, “The Truffle Hunters” follows “a handful of men, seventy to eighty years young, in Piedmont, Italy, on the search for the elusive Alba truffle. They’re guided by a secret culture passed down through generations, as well as by the noses of their cherished and expertly trained dogs. The documentary subtly explores the devastating effects of climate change and deforestation on an age-old tradition through a visually stunning narrative that celebrates life and exalts the human spirit....
