It would be simple for series creators David Simon and George Pelecanos to present their adaptation of Justin Fenton’s book as a six-episode origin story of a mistake, to track Sergeant Wayne Jenkins (Jon Bernthal) from his early days onward, as he ascends the ranks of the BPD and assumes the top post at the GTTF. But it’s telling that “We Own This City” instead takes a more circuitous, non-linear approach....
Many people combing through awards buzz might assume the above description belongs to Oscar heavyweight “Nomadland,” and it does, but there’s another movie in the conversation that hits those same beats with equal success. “The Mole Agent,” Chilean director Maite Alberdi’s tender, unpredictable tale of a man who infiltrates a nursing home at the behest of a private detective, deserves just as much attention from Academy members this season — and might even crack multiple categories, if voters do the right thing....
But those opinions won’t hold up against the inevitable findings of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which, after slamming Smith’s actions in a brief statement on Sunday night and then announcing a formal review was underway on Monday, has issued another statement. This time, they’re asking the public to respect a process that “will take a few weeks,” and they’re also reminding everyone that they still condemn Smith’s actions....
First announced in 2021, “The United States of America Vs. Vince McMahon” has tapped as showrunners “Transparent” team Fitzerman-Blue and Harpster. The Writers Guild Award nominees, both for “Transparent” and Adapted Screenplay for feature “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” will take on the 1994 trial of WWE CEO Vince McMahon, who was accused of supplying steroids to WWE talent. “Vince McMahon is a living legend. We are thrilled to tell his larger-than-life story with our partners at Blumhouse and WWE,” Fitzerman-Blue and Harpster said in a press statement....
Along with plenty of action, “Y: The Last Man” is expected to explore a number of topical themes. Though the show is named after Yorick Brown (Ben Schnetzer), the only cisgender man to survive an apocalyptic event, FX stated in 2019 that “the new world order of women will explore gender, race, class and survival” in the series. All episodes of Season 1 will be directed by women and the production has a significant number of female department heads, including both DPs, the production designer, costume designer, casting director, editors, stunt coordinator and more....
“I should have never played Nina,” Saldana said (via Entertainment Weekly). “I should have done everything in my power, with the leverage that I had 10 years ago — which was a different [amount of] leverage, but it was leverage nonetheless. I should’ve tried everything in my power to cast a Black woman to play an exceptionally perfect Black woman.” When she was cast in 2012, after replacing Mary J.
