Marks (and Isaac and Cho) will revisit Wally’s declaration and it will prove to be true: “Don’t Make Me Go” is a sweet, charming, and eventually daring dramedy with tons of heart. Also true: Where this road trip movie ends its journey will likely engender some very strong reactions, but Vera Herbert’s smart script (a Black List entry), Marks’ assured direction, and the delight of Cho and Isaac’s well-matched performances sell it....

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” filmmakers Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert were recently interviewed by Edgar Wright for Sight and Sound, where they discussed maximalist cinema and why their indie multiverse hit has resonated so strongly with audiences around the globe. The directors, collectively known as the Daniels, said that while the film largely avoids exploring the Internet in favor of traveling to other universes, the themes of over-stimulation and abundance of choice were fueled by internet culture....

The end of “The Expanse” Season 5 is turning out to breathtaking in more ways than one. After building to an oxygen-gasping hard vacuum jump just a few weeks ago, the show embraces that kind of tension on an even bigger scale in its penultimate episode, “Winnipesaukee.” Switching its attention from the void of space to the aftermath of Marco Inaros’ devastating attack on Earth, “The Expanse” follows the group led by Amos (Wes Chatham) as they try to board and rig a private shuttle to escape the planet....

This weekend, two new films were timed to Father’s Day, at least in part. Unfortunately for struggling theaters, neither had them in mind. “Luca,” Pixar’s latest, debuted on Disney+ free for subscribers (unlike some other recent Premium VOD offerings). No viewership reports have emerged. But the figure might have been in the millions just in the U.S. And with the low end of a Pixar opening this century at $39 million (for “Onward” last year, just before COVID shut down theaters), assume Disney+ play cost theaters tens of millions....

Jones notwithstanding, Miguel Sapochnik’s “Finch” only deviates from expectations by doing exactly what it promises from the outset. Finch is introduced to us in full “I Am Legend” mode as he and his WALL-E-esque prototype Dewey search the ruins of Missouri for sustenance and spare parts, but there aren’t any supernatural dangers lurking in the shadows outside of our hero’s tank-like RV. There aren’t any computer-generated zombies biding their time until nightfall....

“Flag Day” starts and ends with a high-stakes car chase, but that big pursuit is an anomaly. A minor-key movie less invested in grand gestures than the intimate two-hander at its center, “Flag Day” isn’t about crimes so much as the personal toll they take on innocent bystanders. Sean Penn’s first directorial effort since 2016’s “The Last Face” compensates for that misstep, if only just, with a sweet and rather straightforward father-daughter drama that lays out most of its emotional cards from the first act and offers few surprises along the way....
