Sundance documentary “Free Chol Soo Lee” centers on the racial profiling and subsequent arrest of then 20-year-old Korean immigrant Chol Soo Lee who was accused of a gang-related murder in San Francisco’s Chinatown in 1973. The documentary premieres August 12 at the IFC Center in New York City, followed by a special one-night-only simulcast screening event hosted by MUBI in over 180 theaters nationwide August 17 for the week that would’ve been Lee’s 70th birthday....

When Benioff and Weiss were looking for directors for “Thrones” Season 7, McElhenney pitched them on hiring his frequent “It’s Always Sunny” director Matt Shakman. Benioff and Weiss accepted and Shakman was hired to direct two Season 7 episodes, including the battle-heavy intalllment “The Spoils of War.” The director proved to be a great addition to the “Thrones” creative team, but Weiss and Benioff decided to mess with McElhenney by telling him otherwise....

There’s something invigorating about talking to the creators of a new, delightful TV series, so it should come as no surprise that talking with Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky, creators of HBO Max’s “Hacks” was a joy unto itself. It’s also unsurprising that the trio were thrilled to discuss the series, their stars, and what the show looks like after the Season 1 finale set its dynamic duo on an assuredly fraught new path....

When “Hacks” co-creator Lucia Aniello, who directed six of the 10 episodes in Season 1 (including the first three), was on the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast, she discussed how that opening shot served the purpose of establishing the myth of the fictional legendary comedian, but also establishing this was a half-hour series that had more than jokes on its mind. “We made sure the camera felt, especially in the pilot, to have shots that mirrored what we wanted the audience to feel, especially for Deborah,” said Aniello....

James Cameron, Guillermo del Toro, John Williams, Kathleen Kennedy, and more than six dozen others signed an open letter addressed to Academy President David Rubin slamming the decision to record the wins for best documentary short, film editing, makeup and hairstyling, original score, production design, animated short, live-action short, and sound outside of the live Dolby Theatre ceremony. The letter explained that such a decision would “demean” those categories and “relegate [them] to the status of second-class citizens,” as shared with Variety....
