His last feature as a director was “She’s Funny That Way” in 2014, though the always-bespectacled filmmaker appeared in episodes of “Get Shorty” on television and recently in the film “Willie and Me.” He also appeared regularly on “The Sopranos” as Dr. Elliot Kupferberg, therapist to Tony Soprano’s own psychologist, Dr. Melfi. Peter Bogdanovich’s vivid personal life made him as conspicuous as his movies, from a torrid affair with actress Cybill Shepherd, the model he discovered when he was making “The Last Picture Show,” that cost him his marriage to collaborator Polly Platt, to the 1980 murder of his girlfriend Dorothy Stratten, who starred in his comedy “They All Laughed....

Of course, before “Moonlight” changed the game in so many ways — for Black films, queer films, and indie films — the story was very different. There was the head-scratching omission of Todd Haynes’ “Carol” from 2015’s Best Picture nominations, despite the film earning six other nods and there being only eight films in the running out of a potential 10. That year, Eddie Redmayne was nominated for portraying a trans woman in “The Danish Girl,” after Jared Leto had won for doing the same thing in “Dallas Buyers Club” the year before....

“It was a difficult line to tread but it’s exactly the line I wanted to be on,” Davies told IndieWire from London in a Zoom interview. “You’re talking about something that is seen as a sexually transmitted disease — it’s far more than that in real life — but nonetheless it’s seen as a sexually transmitted disease in the show in which you want to show sex being joyous. That’s a challenge, but that’s why I sit at this desk all day long....

Most of that is handled in the opening episode, a sprawling introduction to nearly every major player in this stage of the “Shadow and Bone” saga. It’s also a helpful overview of the geopolitical situation at the outset of Leigh Bardugo’s series of novels. At its most basic, there’s an ongoing source of tension between those who live in Ravka on opposite sides of The Fold, a large region of shrouded, mystical darkness that only the most seasoned and experienced travelers attempt to cross....

But it seemed like “She-Hulk” was holding back, that the early episodes were the proverbial Jen Walters (Tatiana Maslany) refusing to engage with her true power. In later episodes, especially the finale, “She-Hulk” hulks out on meta comedy and commitment to the bit — with maximum payoff. Episode 9, “Whose Show Is This Anyway?” catches up with Jen after she hulks out at a gala. She’s lost her job, moved back in with her parents, and remains the target of online (male) harassers at the website Intelligencia....

With nary a comment from the writers, either behind the scenes or onscreen, the character’s name had changed from Emily to Em, and everyone on the show easily transitioned to using they/them pronouns. If only it were that easy in real life, Fightmaster mused during a recent phone interview. “It’s like the most respectful version of what actually happens,” they said. “Which is you change your pronouns and for a year, people give you shit about it, or tell you how hard it is to remember....
