Also screening at the festival were awards contenders “Bardo” from Alejandro G. Iñárritu, “Pinocchio” from Guillermo del Toro, “Living” from Oliver Hermanus, and “She Said” from Maria Schrader. An official release on “Bardo” reads: “Written by Alejandro G. Iñárritu and Nicolás Giacobone, ‘Bardo’ is a nostalgic comedy set against an epic journey. A chronicle of uncertainties where the main character, a renowned Mexican journalist and documentary filmmaker, returns to his native country facing his identity, familial relationships, the folly of his memories as well as the past and new reality of his country.” Bardo stars “Zama” actor Daniel Jimenez Cacho and Griselda Siciliani in the leading roles....

“All Quiet on the Western Front” is one of those foundational texts that transcends clichés, because it invented them. Erich Maria Remarque’s 1928 novel and Lewis Milestone’s Oscar-winning 1930 film are cornerstones of the “war is hell” subgenre — which, in a post-”Apocalypse Now,” post-”Saving Private Ryan” era, has become more ubiquitous than the jingoistic war epics it was designed to counter. There might be some fresh insight to be gained from a new adaptation of “All Quiet,” despite the ripple effects of its influence: War, sadly, has not ended because of films about how awful it is....

That limited availability likely is a disappointment for “Unhinged” with Russell Crowe, which pegged its delayed release to two weeks ahead of “Tenet” and has been a leader in showing in reopened territories in recent weeks. It’s earned a modest $3 million so far in overseas dates. It also bodes less well for the other wide release, Roadside Attractions’ “Words on Bathroom Walls.” The missing theaters for the “Tenet” date appear to be centered in California, New York, North Carolina, Maryland, and possibly Arizona, none of which are listed for August 21....

The “No Time to Die” alum told The Sun that a woman should not play Bond in the franchise, billed by producer Barbara Broccoli as a “reinvention” for the famed character. “There’s no need for a female Bond. There shouldn’t be any need to steal someone else’s character, you know, to take over,” de Armas explained. “This is a novel, and it leads into this James Bond world and this fantasy of that universe where he’s at....
