The tense home invasion thriller “See for Me,” from genre mainstay IFC Midnight, offers a refreshing twist on the blind protagonist: an apathetic young woman with attitude and cunning to spare. Played by visually impaired actor Skylar Davenport (who is non-binary and playing cisgender), Sophie is a former competitive skier who has turned to house sitting for the uber wealthy since losing her vision. Dejected but never self-pitying, she rebuffs her mother’s concerns about her mysterious cash deposits with the disdain of a surly teenager....

Corbett isn’t sure how many episodes of the upcoming 10 he will star in, but he did say, “I think I might be in quite a few,” adding, “I like all those people, they’ve been very nice to me.” What exactly “Sex and the City” will look like circa 2021 is starting to take shape, but with two major characters missing from the reboot: Chris Noth’s Mr. Big, whom Carrie was last seen married to in “Sex and the City 2,” and more controversially, Kim Cattrall as the sex-positive comic relief of the series, Samantha Jones....

The new gross for “Spirited Away” means the fall 2020 box office sensation “Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train” has a bit more to go to claim the all-time record. Released by Toho and Aniplex in October, the animated action movie “Demon Slayer” has grossed $291 million to date in Japan and was expected to clinch the title for highest grosser from “Spirited Away” by the next week. Now that “Spirited Away” has surpassed $300 million, it will take “Demon Slayer” a bit longer than expected to move into the number one position....

That seems to be the primary motivation for “Star Trek: Discovery” to jump ahead 930 years from its 23rd Century setting all the way to the far-flung year of 3188. And though no one involved in the production has explicitly said so, it seems like this creative choice was fueled by a desire to have a blank slate to do whatever the producers of this CBS All Access show want with this extremely talented cast....

“There were people who pulled out of ’12 Years a Slave’ because they didn’t think it would make any money,” McQueen said, “but the fact of the matter is we made over virtually $150 million outside of the United States, which tells you how hungry people were for that kind of narrative. Much has been made of Netflix’s decision to split “Stranger Things 4” into two volumes, with one batch of episodes streaming on May 27 and more being released on July 1. But until now, little was known about how the streamer planned to split up the season. Volume 1 will contain Episodes 1 through 7, with Volume 2 finishing the story with Episodes 8 and 9. Netflix recently revealed that episodes 7 through 9 are both feature-length, ensuring that both volumes receive a proper ending....

At best, “Thor” will end #4 for the season, with a respectable but not-sensational $340 million domestic, and a little more international. That’s down from “Doctor Strange in the Multi-verse of Madness” (Disney) at $411 million domestic, $543 million foreign (#2 summer domestic gross with “Minions” taking third). Shoring up July was “Top Gun: Maverick” adding $112 million to the $541 million it already amassed. The month also showed some strength for original films with Jordan Poole’s “Nope” (Universal) and “Where the Crawdads Sing” (Sony) joining “Elvis” as lesser-grossing but likely profitable non-franchise entries....
