“The Unforgivable” could have been a beat-for-beat remake of the original without any significant difference to its budget or distribution, and yet the final product often feels like watching someone try to squeeze “Crime and Punishment” into the length of an Instagram story. Which isn’t to say that Fingschedit — a German filmmaker looking to capitalize on her volatile 2019 debut “System Crasher” — shouldn’t be commended for taking the road less traveled, even if the shortcut that screenwriters Peter Craig, Courtenay Miles, and Hillary Seitz have mapped out for her ultimately leads nowhere fast....

As it’s requisite for a road movie to start, “The Unknown Country” opens with a departure. Tana (Lily Gladstone), a seemingly reserved Native American woman, leaves Minnesota for a cross-country trip in her well-loved vehicle. No details of what she is running from or toward are provided at this point. Dwarfed by the immensity of snowy landscapes in aerial wide shots, her car pushes on through empty roads enshrouded in contemplative stillness....

Dubbed a female version of “Braveheart,” the film is directed by Gina Prince-Blythewood (“Love & Basketball”) and written by Dana Stevens. Davis plays General Nanisca, who led the all-women warriors in defense of the West African kingdom Dahomey in present-day Benin during the 18th and 19th centuries. Lashana Lynch, John Boyega, and Thuso Mbedu also star. In the trailer, Davis leads a tribe as white settlers arrive in Africa. Nanisca (Davis) warns that the colonizers won’t stop until they own the entirety of Africa, leading King Ghezo (Boyega) to ask if starting a war is worth it....

The film is comprised of a series of conversations between an ensemble cast, but due to COVID restrictions (the film was shot over a six-month period in 2021), no two actors were ever in the same room during their scenes. Bujalski worked with one actor at a time, essentially turning the film into a series of monologues that gave his script and the actors nowhere to hide. “To me, this was an essential cinema experiment,” Bujalski told IndieWire’s Eric Kohn in a recent interview....

The message on TIFF’s website reads, “The filmmaker has withdrawn this film due to rights issues. We apologize for any inconvenience. Current ticket holders will receive an email from TIFF Customer Relations with information on their purchase.” Directed by Vera Drew, “The People’s Joker” is not licensed by DC or Warner Bros.
