Before Kuperstein came on board, the production had chosen to shoot at Bulgaria’s Nu Boyana studio, with the intent of using the “America Town” section of the backlot. When Kuperstein and Cregger started looking at videos and maps of the streets, however, they realized that their blocking and camera moves would be extremely limited compared to their ambitions. “The line producer suggested that instead of using the studio we build the whole thing from scratch in a field,” Kuperstein told IndieWire....

The movie kicks off with a series of title cards to settle us into the time and place: “1978. Before the revolution. A century ago, a band of gypsies traveling from east to west settled in lava and became acquainted with the customs and rituals of the people of this region. But a powerful fear has stayed with them over the years.” What follows next is a striking opening sequence wherein a woman, apparently possessed, falls backward off a ledge to her death, the townspeople gathered in horror....

The gold, silver, and bronze medal placements in the seven student award categories will be revealed in a virtual program highlighting the winners and their films on October 21. Today’s wins also mean the students are eligible to compete in the Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, or Documentary Short Subject categories for the 2021 Oscars. The most recent development on that front was the hiring of veteran Sundance programmer Dilcia Barrera as the Academy’s senior vice president of member relations, global outreach, and administration. The job marks the first time the Academy has created a role for the specific purpose of administering the Best International Feature Film category while rumors of big changes abound. “It’s going to be a continuous look into how to do improve this process,” Barrera said in an interview with IndieWire last week....

No joke though, “80 For Brady” seems like a decently silly and fun time: whether you’re a New England Patriots fan or an admirer of the aforementioned actresses. “80 for Brady” is based on the true story of four senior women who in 2017 all traveled to Houston to watch Brady and the Patriots take on the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI. Spoiler alert: the Pats won, with the Falcons managing to blow a 28-3 lead midway through the fourth quarter....

Pilcher, best known for her producing work (including an Oscar nod for the documentary “Cutie and the Boxer”), appears intent on carving a niche in directing overlooked historical tales about fierce, real-life women. Later this year, her directorial debut “Radium Girls,” about a group of ’20s-era factory workers who advocated for safer conditions, will hit wide release after debuting at the Tribeca Film Festival back in 2018. Pilcher’s doc background is a strong fit, building in specificity and an obvious affection and respect for the material....
