The bulk of the evening’s strangeness came from the acting categories where winners were exclusively white, a step in the wrong direction with regards to recognizing the breadth of talent available, leading the entire affair back into #EmmysSoWhite territory. But setting aside the pasty reality of what it means when you embrace a series centered on the United Kingdom’s royal lineage, there were plenty of disappointments and delights lurking around every corner at the Emmy Awards....

The new season finds East High’s Wildcats preparing to face off against their North High rivals in a prestigious theater competition. Naturally, the Wildcats want to blow the competition out the water with their rendition of “Beauty and the Beast” but who will come out on top?...

The DC Multiverse is buzzing with talk of a rumored new project that will reportedly chronicle the story of Val-Zod, a Kryptonian from Earth 2. Michael B. Jordan is said to be developing a limited series centered around Val-Zod for HBO Max. There’s no official confirmation yet, but Jordan is no stranger to superhero movies, having appeared in “Black Panther” and “Fantastic Four.” Val-Zod is a relatively new character to the Multiverse....

The “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” actor underwent weight training and dieting to transform into his character Adam Warlock, who, as Marvel stated, is “genetically engineered by scientists to be the perfect being.” Yet Poulter told The Independent UK that “mental and physical health has to be number one, and the aesthetic goals have to be secondary” when it comes to changing for a role. And that boundary also includes not taking a character too literally by way of method acting....

“My partner Steven-Charles Jaffe and I wrote a whole treatment and plan for a ‘Star Trek’ feature film,” Meyer said. “We didn’t write a whole script. We wrote a very detailed treatment and a whole pitch doc with illustrations. It’s a very comprehensive thing. And we first we took it to Alex Kurtzman, then we took it to J.J. [Abrams], and then we took it to Emma Watts at Paramount.”...

Diane Paragas’ “Yellow Rose” subtly weaves together the truth of Rose’s story in affecting, though never sentimental or maudlin, ways. Rose and Priscilla keep close because they’re undocumented immigrants, eager to keep their heads down and work hard and basically hope that ICE doesn’t come banging on their door in the middle of the night. Paragas’ film finds fresh ground to explore the price and the power of the American dream, bolstered by country crooning and heartbreaking (and very real) legal worries....

The State of the Race Although the shortlist has only just arrived, it is much easier to catch up on what the contenders are this year for Best Documentary Short than one would think. The newest player to really dominate the category is MTV Documentary Films, which produced three films that made the shortlist for this category. Chalk that up to the hiring of Sheila Nevins, the new head of MTV Documentary Films, who produced countless award-winning projects during her long tenure at HBO....
