Speaking to the press corps, the trio were joined by Moses Ingram (Lady Macduff), Harry Melling (Malcolm), and Bertie Carvel (Banquo). Washington and McDormand spoke about their relationships to Shakespeare (Washington began his career playing Othello, while McDormand played Lady Macbeth at Berkeley Rep in 2016). As “Tragedy of Macbeth” is both a theatrical (December 24) and streaming (January 14 on Apple TV+) release, the question inevitably arose over what Joel Coen thinks about his movie being seen by audiences at home, and on a smaller screen....

“I wasn’t concerned about it because she is a woman,” Washington said. “People are going to see in this film how much of a woman she is. She has far more experience than I do in the industry. I’ve only been in it for seven years. She’s been in it longer, so I’m learning from her. I’m the rookie. Wright, working off a slim screenplay from Jesse Chatham and Erin Dignam — the film is Chatham’s first credit, but Dignam previously directed Wright in early ’90s offerings “Loved” and “Denial” — doesn’t waste much time offering up her broken Edie. The film opens with a pair of scenes that showcase just how far gone she is, first telling a well-meaning therapist that “it’s really difficult to be around people, because they just want me to be better,” before threatening suicide in front of her horrified sister (an underutilized Kim Dickens)....

The city of Luxor, Egypt, is as crumbled as Hana’s soul, emptied out after witnessing myriad atrocities at the Jordan-Syrian border working in a war trauma unit. What she’s looking for in this ancient place is something ineffable, a slowed-down change of scenery to wipe away gruesome memories. Hana idles in the bar at the sleepy Winter Palace Hotel where she’s staying, picking up a crass American tourist for a one night stand she very quickly flees....

In “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” tensions and temperatures escalate throughout the course of an afternoon recording session in 1920s Chicago. A band of musicians await the arrival of one trailblazing performer, the Mother of the Blues, Ma Rainey. She’s played by Viola Davis, the Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actress for another August Wilson adaptation, director Denzel Washington’s “Fences.” (Washington is also a producer on “Ma Rainey’s.”) Late to the session, Ma Rainey stirs up ado with her white manager and producer over the control of her music....
