“Get Out” became one of the buzziest films of the 21st Century after it opened in February 2017 to acclaim and huge box office returns, earning $255 million on a $4.5 million production budget. Peele picked up the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, one of four Oscar nominations the film received. “Get Out” was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Director, making Peele only the fifth Black filmmaker in history to compete for the Academy Award for Best Director....

With the terrific opening of “Top Gun: Maverick” (Paramount), optimism about theater recovery increased accordingly — but we remain a long way from normalcy. “Maverick” broke no Memorial Day records, unless you pretend ticket prices haven’t changed in the last four decades. Those distortions aside, June provides a chance for further improvement. In May, American and Canadian theaters grossed around $785 million, which represents 72 percent of May 2019. That’s the second best month since January 2020, and easily the highest of 2022....

Bonus Reason: OK, fine. The seven-episode limited series is Scorsese’s second documentary on Lebowitz, the famed New York author and public speaker, except this one is nearly four times as long — and arriving in the nick of time. Framed as a guide book to the city through the eyes of two true locals, “Pretend It’s a City” is like a long walk through the Big Apple, pre-COVID of course. If it so happens to frame the essayist’s life, as well, all the better....

But with the groundwork laid and the discussion already had about this show’s relevance, it would have been easy for series co-creator and writer Lang Fisher to rest on goodwill. Instead, Season 2 of “Never Have I Ever” continues to bring that perfect blend of heart and humor with a little sting underlying everything. It’s hard to capture the magic of that first season, but Season 2 has something special all its own....
