Considering that Sebastián Lelio’s “The Wonder” is a religious mystery (of sorts) set in the Irish Midlands circa 1862, the first shot of the film is so wildly unexpected that audiences might fear that the projectionist has played the wrong file. We open, not on the foggy moors of a country still reeling from the Great Famine that had starved it to death some 13 years earlier, but rather in the cavernous space of a modern soundstage — the kind of facility that might house the sets for a period drama like this one....

There are, however, some major caveats to consider. The general public can buy tickets to stream TIFF selections September 10-19, but only in Canada. (Those outside Canada can still purchase tickets for live Q&As and other events.) Likewise, NYFF’s online program is available only in the U.S. and U.S. territories September 17-October 11. And attendees at each event are at the mercy of a variety of rental windows and price points....

“The Human Voice” is based on a one-act play by Jean Cocteau, written in 1928 and first mounted in France in 1930. It concerns one woman’s final phone conversation with her longtime lover, who has plans to marry another woman. The clip shows Swinton looking sad in a dazzling red ball gown, compelled behind an opaque sheet by the strings of Almodóvar’s longtime musical collaborator Alberto Iglesias. This woman has something on her mind....

Fans may remember her 2016 stomach-twisting debut feature “Raw,” but five years before that Ducournau directed a short film titled “Junior.” This amazingly disturbing short centers on a 13-year-old tomboy whose body becomes home to a startling metamorphosis. IndieWire recently interviewed Ducournau about her shocking feature “Titane,” following an erotic dancer who becomes impregnated by a Cadillac and is also a serial killer....

“If the wind was too strong, it would blow me off the ramp,” Cruise said about the stunt. “The helicopter [filming the stunt] was a problem, because I didn’t want to be hammering down that ramp at top speed and get hit by a stone. Or if I departed in a weird way, we didn’t know what was going to happen with the bike. I had about six seconds once I departed the ramp to pull the chute and I don’t want to get tangled in the bike....

The organizers of the protest — including Abbie Hoffman (Cohen), Jerry Rubin (Strong), Tom Hayden (Redmayne), and Bobby Seale (Abdul-Mateen) — were charged with conspiracy to incite a riot and the trial that followed was one of the most notorious in history....

So commanding and ominous, yet vulnerable and charismatic, Michael Kenneth Williams would come to imbue each of these traits into an array of inimitable characters across film and television. Few TV fans will forget his work as Chalky White on “Boardwalk Empire,” Freddy Knight in “The Night Of,” Bobby McCray in “When They See Us,” or Leonard Pine in “Hap and Leonard,” especially. And while he would nod to his iconic breakout role, in jest or remembrance, Williams never let Omar define him....
