Jenna Ortega stars as Vada, a high schooler in emotional freefall after a school shooting alters her friends, family, and other relationships in her orbit. After watching all 232 minutes of “The Real Thing,” however, it’s easy to appreciate why the 41-year-old “Harmonium” filmmaker gave himself a get out of jail free card: This befuddled anti-romance, about a cautious salaryman whose life unravels after he saves a reckless woman from getting hit by a train, may have its roots in a popular comic book (and in Jonathan Demme’s “Something Wild” before that), but it’s unmistakably a Fukada movie to its core....

Fans of Fleischer’s feature will not be at all disappointed by Andy Serkis’ faithful followup, “Venom: Let There Be Carnage,” which sticks to the formula of the first — that formula being, of course, “let star Tom Hardy do whatever he wants, even better if that somehow involves crustaceans” — while also inching ever closer to putting the “lethal protector” into a familiar box. Still, even as Eddie Brock (Hardy) and his alien symbiote BFF (once again delightfully voiced by Hardy) hack their way through both Eddie’s messy personal life and the nutty serial killer who wants nothing more than to end it, it’s hard to shake the sense that the dynamic duo’s best years (and movies) might still be ahead of them....

As Netflix founder and Co-CEO Reed Hastings acknowledged during Netflix’s Q2 earnings call, “Tough in some ways losing a million and calling it a success.” The media analysts at Wells Fargo believe Netflix “has found a bottom.” That means there’s nowhere to go but up — especially with an ad-supported tier and password-sharing crackdowns on the horizon. (Those programs will roll out domestically in 2023, but their financial impact will likely not be realized until at least 2024....

The film is titled “Wind River: The Next Chapter” and hails from Rob Reiner’s newly relaunched label Castle Rock Entertainment. Additional cast will be announced soon, but it’s unclear if the film’s original stars Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen will return in any capacity. Sheridan, who directed and wrote the original “Wind River,” is not involved in the sequel. 2017’s “Wind River” followed a hunter (Renner) who aids an FBI agent (Olsen) in the investigation of the murder of a young woman on a Native American reservation in Wyoming....
