When preparing the footage for “R#J,” director Carey Williams and editor Lam Nguyen were determined to make the movie stand out. Though the film, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, is based on the familiar story of Romeo and Juliet, its tale of love and loss is bound to wow audiences anew for one major reason: It takes place entirely on iPhone screens. By adapting traditional filmmaking techniques to the new “Screenlife” format, Nguyen and Williams construct a narrative that feels fresh, innovative, and endlessly surprising....

The comedy is directed by Kitao Sakurai (“Bad Trip”), and also stars Jack Black, who serves as a producer on the film alongside Roz Music and Matt Tolmach (“Venom: Let There Be Carnage”). The synopsis per Deadline says the story “follows Sherman (Black), who falls in love with Will’s (Cube) mom, who has only one thing to say about that: ‘Oh hell no.’” Scot Armstrong, Tracy Oliver, Jessica Gao, and Rodney Rothman wrote the script....

Based on D. Eric Maikranz’s 2009 fantasy novel “The Reincarnationist Papers,” “Infinite” follows Evan McCauley (Wahlberg), a self destructive man who is haunted by memories of skills he has never learned and places he has never visited. When he discovers a secret group that call themselves “Infinites,” he learns that his memories are real, but they are from multiple past lives. The Infinites invite Evan into their world, a centuries-old secret society made up of 28 others who are just like him, and he realizes he is not alone....

The documentary, which makes its world premiere in the Spotlight section of the 2022 New York Film Festival, debuts in select theaters October 28 before streaming on Netflix November 11. Mitchell writes, directs, and narrates the feature, which includes interviews with Samuel L. Jackson, Laurence Fishburne, Zendaya, and Whoopi Goldberg, as well as actors Billy Dee Williams, Harry Belafonte, Mario Van Peebles, Margaret Avery, and Charles Burnett. “They were proof that we were here, that we create culture, that we have voices, and that we will be heard,” Fishburne says in the trailer about the legacy of Black filmmakers....

Warner Bros. shocked the industry by moving its entire 2021 film slate to the theatrical-HBO Max release model, a decision that has been scorned by the studio’s own filmmakers like Christopher Nolan and Villeneuve. Directors working outside of Warner Bros. have also condemned the studio. Judd Apatow, who has long made films for Universal, said the Warner Bros’ decision is “disrespectful” to filmmakers who had no idea their films would be moving to a hybrid release model....
