This summer could bring as many as 10 titles with the potential to gross over $100 million in domestic box office. At least three could surpass the $400 million mark. From the top-10 perspective, it could place this summer on par to those of the pre-pandemic 2015-2019 — but there’s a lot fewer summer releases overall and that’s something of a buzzkill. We’re going the wrong way. Fourth-quarter 2021 box office was 72 percent of 2019; the 2022 box office to date is 58 percent of the same period in 2019....

Based on Joyce Carol Oates’ fictionalized narrative of Monroe’s life in a novel of the same name, the film stars de Armas as the titular blonde bombshell who skyrocketed to fame as a comedic actress, singer, and sex symbol before her untimely death at age 36. After the trailer for the NC-17-rated Netflix film, out September 28, was released, questions arose over de Armas’ breathy take on Monroe’s voice. Now, the official Marilyn Monroe Estate is standing by casting de Armas in the unauthorized portrayal....

“Blood Red Sky” is an emergency mode from the minute it starts; we know that something went screwy aboard a passenger jet en route from Germany to New York, and the film begins with an amateur pilot landing the plane at an RAF air base in Scotland (where snipers are at the ready with their rifles trained on the cockpit). A little boy named Elias (Carl Anton Koch) descends from the cabin with a teddy bear clutched under his arm, and the rest of the movie flashes back to show us what happened to all of the other passengers....

Maria Bakalova stars in the film as Bee, the unassuming new girlfriend of Sophie (Amandla Stenberg), who is nervous to meet Sophie’s wealthy pals at a remote mansion. “They’re not as nihilistic as they look on the Internet,” Sophia assures Bee as they enter a lavish pool party. Things quickly go sideways, though, as the rich millennials hunker down during a hurricane and a party game of Bodies, Bodies, Bodies turns IRL deadly....

Shortly before the presidential started at 9pm ET on September 29, the fake Kazakhstan Twitter account posted a video prematurely celebrating Trump’s victory over Biden in the event. The video featured the voice of Cohen as Borat and was accompanied by a caption that read: “Congratulations to Donald Trump for winning debate today! Impressive and amazing result for a strong premier who always put America and Kazakhstan first!” Later during the debate, the Twitter account trolled Biden by posting, “Biden WRONG – face masks NOT effective against Covid19!...

Perhaps some audiences will jive to the plot holes visible from outer space that perforate this movie written by “South Park” story editor Amanda Idoko, but Taylor does not understand how to make a pileup of errors and misunderstandings amid a folksy collective work the same way that, say, the Coen brothers do. Still, actors clearly enjoy working with the “Get on Up” and “The Help” filmmaker, as this is a cast on the level of “Mars Attacks!...

Not making the cut, though, was Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet,” the time inversion spy thriller, which was roundly criticized for mixing its dialogue way too low. Also overlooked was George Clooney’s sci-fi drama, “The Midnight Sky,” though the director will be honored as CAS Filmmaker.
