“The reason that we embarked on this film was to expose a buried truth, both literally and figuratively, in the suppression of the history of the massacre, and the injustice done, not merely to the victims and survivors, but to the
generations that followed,” said Jonathan Silver, who directed the documentary, during the PBS virtual panel. “It was deeply shameful to me as a human rights journalist to learn about this massacre only two years ago....

“I was in the writing room, briefly, in L.A. in mid-March and flew back to Canada about 24 hours before the travel ban and quarantine was put in place,” the show’s executive producer, Liz Levine, told IndieWire. But arriving in Canada in the nick of time to start production was more than an added blessing; for Levine and the writers room, it gave them an opportunity to use the uncertain times to refine and strengthen their scripts to talk about more than just what goes bump in the night....

Usually, these things go both ways. Watching the show led me to contemplate my own family connections to Orthodox Judaism, and whether I had ever made a legitimate attempt to address the disconnection I have with my closest relative at the center of that world. He’s my brother, and “Unorthodox” gave me a welcome excuse to discuss issues we had set aside years ago. “Unorthodox,” an eight-time Emmy nominee, doesn’t make a compelling case for religious Judaism, but it wrestles with what it means to feel to connected to that routine....

But does that mean it’s good? Bad? Effective? Affecting? “Timely,” on its own, doesn’t really tell us anything qualitative, and even as a context clue, the word has been hollowed out by misuse. Commentators who use “timely” to describe narratives about police misconduct or racial injustice simply haven’t been paying attention long enough. Overuse is a problem, too. As long as you’re writing about what’s going on in the world today — and, one way or another, we all are — everything is timely....

“It was a tough character to embody, the Hobbs character,” Diesel said. “My approach at the time was a lot of tough love to assist in getting that performance where it needed to be. As a producer to say, ‘Okay, we’re going to take Dwayne Johnson, who’s associated with wrestling, and we’re going to force this cinematic world, audience members, to regard his character as someone that they don’t know.’”...
