It is also miscast, in nearly every role. “The Stand” isn’t bolstered by a fleet of skilled actors so much as it’s hindered by watching those proven talents struggle to find a credible tone within the series’ cleaned-up TV sheen and dirty allegory for good vs. evil. Showrunner Benjamin Cavell, alongside pilot director and executive producer Josh Boone as well as Stephen King’s son, Owen King, serving as producer, stick to the book’s story — save for a few choices likely considered too dark for mainstream audiences — but can’t expand on characters beyond what now feel like outdated archetypes, which is often a struggle in adapting lengthy novels....

As documented in the oral history, “The Emperor’s New Groove” got its start at Walt Disney as a much different film titled “The Kingdom of the Sun,” which was to feature original songs by Sting. Davidson and Styler documented the making of that movie, but Disney ultimately shelved the project after “doubt-filled meetings and catastrophic screenings and arguments.” Pieces of “The Kingdom of the Sun” found their way into 2000’s beloved “The Emperor’s New Groove,” including two Sting songs and the voice of Eartha Kitt, but the documentary capturing the making and shelving of the original film was never officially released....

“The Tomorrow War” also stars “GLOW” favorite Betty Gilpin alongside “Veep” funny man Sam Richardson, Edwin Hodge, Jasmine Mathews, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, and Keith Powers. If Pratt’s involvement indicates some level of humor to the rather serious-sounding proceedings, McKay’s directing role is another nod in that direction. In addition to helming 2017’s “The Lego Batman Movie” under powerhouse producers Lord and Miller, McKay was also a producer and director on three seasons of Adult Swim’s beloved animated comedy “Robot Chicken....

“The Tragedy of Macbeth” is Joel’s follow-up to “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” and pairs Oscar winners Washington and McDormand for the first time on screen together. McDormand is fresh off Oscar wins earlier this year for Best Actress and Best Picture with “Nomadland,” and she could very well find herself with another acting nomination for sinking her teeth into Lady Macbeth. Washington stars in the title role, while Corey Hawkins stars as Macduff....

“The Underground Railroad” takes a bold approach to telling a story of slavery, as Whitehead’s novel was set in an alternate history where the 19th-century Underground Railroad was a literal railroad that American slaves used to flee the South and find freedom. The series chronicles Cora Randall’s (Thuso Mbedu) desperate bid for freedom in the antebellum South. After she escapes a Georgia Plantation, she finds the fabled Railroad is a real one full of engineers and conductors, whose secret network of tracks and tunnels runs beneath the soil of the South....
