The Berlin festival barely squeaked by before shutdowns swept Europe, and after that it was all about cancellations — SXSW, Tribeca, Cannes, Telluride and nearly everything in between. New York and Toronto cobbled together a combination of online and drive-in events. The Venice Film Festival was one of the few to host a physical edition, with masks de rigueur for the red carpet. Meanwhile, many distributors thought “cobbled” was too close to “hobbled” and held back their movies in hopes that more conventional circumstances would soon prevail....

Released in 2006, the first installment, “Reprise” — titled after the act of repetition (in music or in life) — centers on two young writers and best friends, Phillip (Danielsen Lie) and Erik (Espen Klouman Høiner), evaluating their potential for greatness. The second part, 2011’s “Oslo, August 31st,” chronicles a decisive day in the damaged existence of a 34-year-old man (Danielsen Lie) who believes his time has passed and wants to cut it short....

The fervor for Julia Ducournau’s “Titane” feels, at least in part, motivated by a kind of relieved elation that a female filmmaker is the new cause célèbre of a genre that has historically been dominated by men. For many years, the highbrow “arthouse body horror” was seen as the purview of Lynch and Cronenberg, not Kusama or Kent. With just two films, the Palme d’Or winner “Titane” and her previous teen cannibal feature “Raw,” Ducournau has allowed those who enjoy the sick thrill of skillfully art-directed torture to rest somewhat easy, knowing the perverted gaze behind the camera was — refreshingly — not entirely male....

However, that project was not the only undertaking that the 42-year-old Ukrainian DP had been working on at the time of her death. In September 2020, Hutchins joined director Dennis Hauck in Ireland for the production of a still-untitled 19th century period piece. Now, Hauck is trying to finish the work they started together. “She was definitely one of those DPs that lived and breathed filmmaking,” Hauck said in a phone interview with IndieWire....

So it’s fitting that Olivier Assayas, in a fresh spin on his 1996 film “Irma Vep,” uses a new version of a similar story to soak in all the disparate elements that have to come together in order for a project to exist. Like its predecessor, this “Irma Vep” uses the entrance of its lead actress as a gateway to all the swirling interpersonal tensions that go into any kind of filmed story....

Rossellini auditioned and screen-tested for the 1986 psychosexual drama about an intoxicatingly toxic relationship; ultimately, Kim Basinger was cast opposite Mickey Rourke. “Fatal Attraction,” “Indecent Proposal,” and “Deep Water” director Adrian Lyne helmed the feature. “After seeing the film, in a way, I was happy I was not chosen,” Rossellini revealed to Vulture. “I thought that Adrian’s films were a little exploitative.” She continued, “I thought it was not very deep....
