On the campaign trail is Oscar-winner Aaron Sorkin (“The Social Network”), the writer-director of well-reviewed Netflix courtroom drama “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” about the 1968 Chicago Democratic Convention riots as well as the subsequent trial, who is participating in various virtual conversations and tributes from the safety of his home office, from my recent Writers Guild Foundation interview and recent awards in Mill Valley, Middleburg, and Montclair, to the upcoming SFFILM Awards Gala on December 9....

Netflix Biopics always have an edge in this race. After winning as Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour,” Gary Oldman takes on charming alcoholic “Citizen Kane” screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz in David Fincher’s “Mank” (Netflix) — with no prosthetics, scoring Globe, SAG, and CCA slots, along with Chadwick Boseman, who’s sweeping the awards so far with Globe, CCA and SAG wins, and a BAFTA nod. Boseman is the favorite to win the second posthumous Best Actor Oscar (following Peter Finch of “Network”) for his incendiary performance as a trumpeter backing blues singer Ma Rainey (Viola Davis) in George C....

The other nominees include Pixar’s first fantasy, “Onward,” and two entries from Netflix: “Over the Moon,” the gorgeous musical fantasy about the Chinese Moon Goddess from Disney legend Glen Keane (Oscar winner for the “Dear Basketball” short), and Aardman’s “A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon.” With director/chief creative officer Pete Docter at the helm, Pixar accomplished its most ambitious film yet by contrasting gritty New York City with the ethereal Great Before....

While “Robin Robin” is the clear frontrunner this year, (aside from the studio’s name recognition, it also boasts the vocal stylings of Gillian Anderson and Richard E. Grant), the rest of the category is filled with experimental and challenging fare from around the world. It may not make the race very interesting, but the viewing is another story. Playing as if in a different world entirely, the other four contenders feature poignant meditations on love and romance, a whimsical character study of an eccentric artist and her sister’s obsession with taxidermy, and a shocking mini-horror about a secret police agent and her torture dog....

The beginning of “The Beginning of the End” — the inevitable title of “Ozark’s” Season 4 premiere — flashes forward to a scene still not put in context by the time Part 1 comes to a close.
