“The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” starts strong, kicking off with the sort of haunted-house possession story that made both “The Conjuring” and “The Conjuring 2” so nerve-shredding. It’s the summer of 1981, and the Glatzel family is weeks into a horror that only paranormal investigators Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) can address. Mop-topped David Glatzel (Julian Hilliard) has been possessed by something, an evil entity that delights in torturing the sweet kiddo and tearing apart the Glatzels’ new Connecticut home in equal measure....
The splintering of the family unit, characters chasing their dreams or venturing into fantastical realms to escape their home life or restore a lost connection — this is the core of the Steven Spielberg filmography, and the subtext that’s made text by “The Fabelmans.” It’s part of what “Fabelmans” production designer Rick Carter identifies as “the Spielberg code,” the threads tying together the 33 features in the director’s filmography. And Carter would know those threads better than most people, having worked with Spielberg 11 times dating back to “Jurassic Park....
Given you’re curious enough to read this, then odds are you’ve reached the end of “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” and are thus well aware of the distinctions separating it from its predecessor, “The Haunting of Hill House.” Less focused on inexhaustible frights and more ambitious in its thematic questioning of life after death, Mike Flanagan’s latest anthology entry for Netflix is also a bit of a let down — not for either of the aforementioned variations, but because of how close this tender ghost story comes to achieving the thoughtful resonance it seeks....
