The coming-of-age comedy explores the life of teenager Rainbow Gold (Victoria Gabrielle Platt), who is entering womanhood and navigating conversations and experiences around standards of beauty, self-image, and the rights Black women have over their bodies. Rainbow attends a strict parochial school, where she studies dance, and is just starting to become aware of boys. Meanwhile, she lives with her strait-laced mother Alma (Kim Weston-Moran), who runs a hair salon in the parlor of their home....

“My Father’s Dragon” (Cartoon Saloon/Netflix), the 2D adaptation of Ruth Stiles Gannett’s classic children’s book, from Oscar-nominated director Nora Twomey (“The Breadwinner”), took home the Special Jury prize. This provides some heat as Cartoon Saloon chases its fifth Best Animated Feature Oscar nomination. The Audience Award went to “Aurora’s Sunrise,” the animated documentary from director Inna Sahakyan, which tells the remarkable story of Aurora Mardiganian, who survived the Armenian genocide as a teenager, and came to America, where she starred in a 1919 silent Hollywood film based on her survival of the massacre that slaughtered 1 million Armenians....

Here is an excerpt from Jenkins’ statement on the film: Jenkins goes on to explain that he was inspired by the celebrated painter Kerry James Marshall, in particular his portrait of African American artist Scipio Moorhead. He also says that short includes an original score by Nicholas Brittell, who composed both of Jenkins’ feature films, “Moonlight” and “If Beale Street Could Talk.
