The official synopsis for “Bones and All” reads: “The film is a story of first love between Maren (Russell), a young woman learning how to survive on the margins of society, and Lee (Chalamet), an intense and disenfranchised drifter, as they meet and join together for a thousand-mile odyssey which takes them through the back roads, hidden passages, and trap doors of Ronald Reagan’s America. But despite their best efforts, all roads lead back to their terrifying pasts and to a final stand which will determine whether their love can survive their otherness....

Not so fast, though. Yes, grosses remained tepid, and comparisons with the last good May (in 2019) make the case for continued concern. But here’s a counterintuitive thought. Even though grosses showed no improvement, the mixed financial results for the month actually revealed more positive news than any single month since theaters reopened. And in an ironic twist, positive things can be seen even from a couple of the month’s biggest disappointments....

That could go a long way toward reducing the current box-office imbalance that has “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “The Batman” responsible for 57 percent of the domestic box office. For 2022 through March 31, box office totals about $1.325 billion. In 2019, the first three months represented $2.5 billion. The business desperately needs consistent performance from a wider range of films, and in quicker succession. April will present nine wide-release films, many (but not all) based in franchises....

Based on the personal life of science fiction author Phillip K. Dick, “Jane” is rooted in the relationship between Dick and his twin sister Jane, who died six weeks after birth. Jane’s passing impacted Dick’s creative work and legacy, according to his daughter Isa Hackett. Dick penned ‘The Man in the High Castle” and “Minority Report,” both of which were adapted for the screen. His work also inspired “Blade Runner” and “Total Recall....

The “Yellowjackets” star revealed during the “WTF with Marc Maron” podcast that she can’t rewatch the 1995 ghost movie “Casper” because of how embarrassing she feels her performance is. “If you actually watch ‘Casper,’ I’m terrible in it,” Ricci dished. “People get so upset when I say that. Because I’m like, ‘No, it’s a wonderful movie.’ Because it’s a childhood treasure to people. But I am terrible in it.” Ricci was 13 years old when she played Kat in the film based on the Harvey Comics cartoon character Casper the Friendly Ghost....

“‘Well, do you have a problem with people seeing ‘Dunkirk’ on my phone or whatever?’” Nolan asked himself before answering, “No, I don’t. But the reason I don’t is because it’s put into these big theaters as its primary form, or its initial distribution. In previous years, IndieWire has surveyed critics for polls out of Telluride and TIFF, but we felt it was worthwhile to cast a wider net this time around to capture the sheer range of cinema on display. While 137 critics voted, they were asked to both share their absolute favorites from all the fall festivals combined as well as the favorites from the specific festivals they attended. The result points to some obvious suspects, but also showcases a range of films poised to continue to shake up the conversation....
