Since those movies don’t exactly need our help getting on buyers radars, we’re leaving them off our usual memo to distributors in favor of a number of titiles that could really use the boost. The year ahead is certainly going to be an unpredictable one for distribution companies as the future of exhibition remains an open question. But the quality of these movies is not up for debate, nor is their potential to resonate with audiences well beyond Sundance....

The screenplay comes from three-time Oscar nominee John Logan. King and Logan previously collaborated on Martin Scorsese’s “The Aviator.” Logan also wrote Ridley Scott’s Best Picture winner “Gladiator.” The movie promises to give audiences an inside portrait of the complex man who became the “King of Pop,” utilizing his most iconic songs and performances as a window into his artistic process and personal life. It is not known if the film will confront the child sexual abuse allegations that plagued the last half of his life (he died in 2009) and were most recently revisited in the HBO documentary “Leaving Neverland....

When the Apple TV+ comedy “Mythic Quest” debuted its “Quarantine” episode in late May of last year, Rob McElhenney’s sweet ode to caring co-workers hit at the right time, with the right notes. Zany virtual bets and inventive Zoom experiments made the half-hour a joyful reprieve, just like much of the show that preceded it. But two months into stay-at-home orders, Poppy Li’s struggles with social isolation — and her co-creative director Ian’s recognition of her deteriorating morale — gave the episode an extra emotional wallop....

The PGA is a sturdy bellwether for the likely nominees for the Best Picture Oscar, which will be a guaranteed ten this year. This opens up the field to more adventurous choices. While ABC is rooting for a global blockbuster like “Spider-Man: No Way Home” to gain a Best Picture slot, it is not listed by the more mainstream PGA. Since its inception, the PGA has predicted 22 of the past 32 winners of the Academy Award for Best Picture....
