First sequels to Marvel franchises have a curious history: Many do better than the original. Here, that’s not likely true. Films stronger the second time around (“Captain America,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Thor,” “Doctor Strange,” “Ant-Man”) were good but not stratospheric performers. The stratospheric debuts (“Avengers,” the initial “Spider-Man” series, as well as “The Dark Knight,” “Star Wars,” “Jurassic Park”) saw sequels with lesser returns. That’s the “Black Panther” category....

Pitt said he channeled Chan when starring in David Leitch’s “Bullet Train,” an adaptation of the Japanese novel “Maria Beetle” by Kōtarō Isaka. Pitt plays an assassin who boards a bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto with the mission to collect a briefcase onboard while fending for his life against other trained killers, portrayed by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Bad Bunny, Joey King, and Zazie Beetz. “We always talk about Jackie Chan, how much we love Jackie Chan,” Pitt told Entertainment Tonight of filming the action-comedy, in theaters August 5....

The best films of this year’s festival run the gamut: again, including familiar names (like the Cannes competition jury, IndieWire and its dedicate staff and freelancers flipped for new offerings from returning stars like Östlund and Park), plus other perennial favorites like James Gray, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Cristian Mungiu, and David Cronenberg. But we also went wild for entirely new visions from rising stars like Charlotte Wells, Léa Mysius, and Lola Quivoron....

No doubt the challenging weather decreased theater attendance by more than a little, particularly Friday. But the good news is that when Christmas falls on a Sunday, that day is the best of the three-day weekend. And then the holiday Monday is even more significant. It would have been more catastrophic if the cold front had moved in two days later. “Avatar: The Way of Water” (Disney) was the relative bright spot among all titles....

When “Creed II” was released in 2018, it cemented Michael B. Jordan’s status as the face of the “Rocky” franchise moving forward. Now, the “Black Panther” star is stepping back into the ring for “Creed 3,” which is slated to hit theaters later this year. He’s also directing the film, which will mark his directorial debut. “Lovecraft Country” star Jonathan Majors joined the franchise as Creed’s latest opponent, and it sounds like he pushed his body to the limit for the film....
