Former “The View” co-host Meghan McCain wrote in her Daily Mail column that HBO Max’s “Sex and the City” revival series, “And Just Like That,” missed the mark when catering to original fans. “For a start, so much of the original show, while groundbreaking at the time, hasn’t aged well in the way that many other shows of that era have,” McCain wrote. “So many of the promises of ‘Sex and the City’ turned out to be completely fictional and lacking any relation to reality…As I have gotten older, I have cringed at the messaging to so many young women and wished for more realism and nuance when it came to intimacy and relationships with men....

Published, July 26: “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” director Destin Daniel Cretton has been tapped to helm “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.” A source at Disney confirmed to IndieWire that Cretton is attached to the fifth “Avengers” film that will debut in 2025, followed by “Avengers: Secret Wars” to close out Marvel’s Phase 6. After directing “Shang-Chi,” Cretton inked an overall deal with Marvel and is additionally developing a live-action “Wonder Man” series with “Community” writer-producer Andrew Guest....

Yet for all the successes of “Big Mouth,” nothing in its initial run could prepare viewers for “A Very Big Mouth Christmas,” the eighth episode of Season 5, which throws a whole bunch of curveballs into the mix. The anthology episode, a recent submission to the Emmys, uses a hodgepodge of adventurous animation to envision several holiday-themed stories that take the show’s subversive edge in new directions, starting with a live-action framing device that finds hormone monsters Maury (Nick Kroll) and Connie (Maya Rudolph) hosting the episode as puppets....

With Spike Lee as its president, the return of the Cannes Competition looks to be one of the most unpredictable in years. He’s joined by an international group of filmmakers and actors, mostly women, whose work suggest a wide array of sensibilities in play: The other directors are Mati Diop, Jessica Hausner, Melanie Laurent, and Kleber Mendonca Filho; the performers are Mylene Farmer, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Tahar Rahim, and Song Kang-ho. If they all voted for movies that looked exactly like the ones they make, the safe money’s on it a real outside-the-box choice....
