In a historic win, Julia Ducournau won the Palme d’Or for her film “Titane,” which Neon releases stateside this year. This makes her only the second female director ever to win the Cannes Film Festival’s top prize, including Jane Campion in 1993 for “The Piano.” (In a gaffe that briefly stunned the audience, Spike Lee accidentally announced the Palme winner at the top of the ceremony.) Since the 2020 festival was canceled due to the pandemic, the last film to take the Palme d’Or (the festival’s top prize) was Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” in 2019 — a film that went all the way to the Oscars, winning Best Picture the following year....

Beyond all that, “TÁR” is a treatise on modern times. Lydia’s experiences with social media and repercussions for her actions register as an angry response to the age of accountability. Yet even as the movie premiered to raves Venice and Telluride, Field and Blanchett have been careful about how much they have addressed these issues in limited press for the movie. This week, as “TÁR” made its North American premiere at the New York Film Festival ahead of its theatrical release, the movie’s director and star sat down with IndieWire at the Whitby Hotel to dig into the themes that emerge from Lydia’s story and how they address contemporary circumstances....

The younger Hoffman will reportedly be the main character in the untitled ensemble film centered around a fictional child actor, as has been reported in previous casting news about the film. As with the extent of the director’s prior filmography, Anderson wrote the script. Production is currently under way at various locations in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley (where his previous films “Inherent Vice” and “Boogie Nights” also took place), with Bradley Cooper also playing a role in the film....

“I didn’t invent the narrative that the finale was empirically bad, but I amplified it,” Lindelof said. “The fact that people feel the need to say to me, ‘Hey, I actually kind of liked the way that it ended.’ Or the expectation some people have that ‘I have to know going in that the ending is going to be disappointing.’ The fact that I told people what to think about ‘Lost’ is a big regret that I have....

FX recently unveiled a featurette for “Dave” following its Season 2 premiere on June 16. The series centers on Dave (Dave Burd, who co-created the show and stars as a fictionalized version of himself), a neurotic up-and-coming rapper who aims to make it big in the industry. “At the end of Season 1 Dave broke up with Ally because he chose his career over Ally,” series co-creator Jeff Schaffer said in the featurette....

The title refers to a nickname for Richardsville, a Tar Heel State town that might be fictional in this telling, but is rooted in the combined experiences and fascinations of its two writers and creators: John Hodgman and David Rees. In “Dicktown” (the featured Season 3 presentation of the brilliantly eccentric FXX anthology shorts collection “Cake”), John Hunchman (Hodgman) is the former precocious boy detective still puzzling out amateur-level jobs, while David Purefoy (Rees) is the former bully who’s now his partner in crime-solving....

The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Sam Raimi’s sequel “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” will not be released in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, or Qatar due to a new character being gay. Homosexuality is officially illegal across the Gulf, and films that feature LGBTQ+ themes or characters are often censored. The “Doctor Strange 2” character in question is America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), who is a lesbian in the film and the Marvel comics....
