For a century, “cinema” has been most often used in reference to an industry that almost entirely excludes the African experience. I want to change that with Akoroko, a new platform that will bridge African film and television industries with the West with consistent, robust, and candid coverage that’s local yet globally accessible. It will include criticism, analysis, consultation, cataloging, curated film streaming, and education. An October 2021 UNESCO report noted that the African film industry generates $5 billion in annual revenue, with the potential for $20 billion....

Heche drove her car into a Mar Vista home in Los Angeles on August 5. The car caught fire and “heavily damaged” the house, according to Los Angeles Fire Department representative Brian Humphrey. Heche later died August 12 after being taken off of life support while in a coma. Now, Lynne Mishele is suing the Heche estate. Michele, who was renting the Mar Vista home at the time of the crash, is seeking “at least $2 million” in damages for negligence, infliction of emotional distress, and trespass....

Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway now has 91 million shares of Paramount. According to Wells Fargo equity analyst Steven Cahall, with around 15 percent of class B shares valued at $1.7 billion, Buffett’s company is Paramount’s largest outside investor. In mid-May, Buffett disclosed his investment company purchased 75 million shares of PARA. At the time, PARA was trading much higher and the stake was worth $2.6 billion. That revelation goosed the stock from under $27 per share to the low $30s....

The festival’s top prize, the Golden Bear for Best Film, was presented by Shyamalan. “For its extraordinary performances, from the child actors to the actors in their 80s, for the ability to show the tenderness and comedy and struggle,” he awarded Spanish drama “Alcarras,” from director Carla Simon. The festival did away with gendered acting awards once again, instead offering Silver Bears for Best Supporting (Indonesian actress Laura Basuki, “Before Now & Then”) and Best Lead Performance (German comedian Meltem Kaptan, “Rabiye Kurnaz vs George W Bush”)....

For Kroll, this season is a natural evolution for the characters and the show. “It’s a combination of letting our characters dictate the stories we tell, but we also go in season to season with larger themes in mind,” Kroll said....

Creator Chris Van Dusen, who adapted the series of novels by Julia Quinn, has been working diligently to make sure the second season lives up to the sky high hype. But while running one of the hottest shows on television is far from the worst job in the world, he says that the massive success of Season 1 has placed a unique burden on his creative process. “I had a very clear vision for Season 1 and I was given the freedom to follow through on it,” he said in an interview with EW....
