Damien Chazelle’s sprawling Old Hollywood epic has all the makings of an Oscar darling, but without any festival screenings, the content and quality of the film largely remain a mystery. Still, the A-list cast featuring Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, as well as Chazelle’s proven ability to tell stories about Hollywood, make it a formidable contender. At least, its cast certainly thinks so. Pugh was always expected to make a rather brief appearance at the Venice premiere, flying in from Budapest (where she is currently filming “Dune: Part II”) for the occasion. But a new report from Variety revealed that while the actress is fulfilling her obligation to attend the event, she will not be attending the press conference to promote the film as her plane does not land until after it ends. In 2018, Kim was nominated for an Oscar on director Ramell Ross’ “Hale County This Morning, This Evening,” an operatic immersion into the lives of a Black community in Alabama; 2019’s “Midnight Traveler” follows an Afghan director and his family on the lam from the Taliban through footage shot as they fled; “Bitterbrush,” which opened earlier this summer, portrays the lives of two Montana cowgirls....

Evgeny Afineevsky’s sequel to Maidan Uprising doc “Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom” takes place in the early stages of the invasion of Ukraine. We begin with an effective but frantically paced animated summary of Ukraine’s history, beginning 1,200 years ago and through wars, occupations, and catastrophes. No matter what borders took hold or occupying forces said, the film maps out how Ukraine became its own distinct country that refused to be swallowed whole by Russia....

Not much is known about the film, outside of Gadot’s being the lead and that “Heart of Stone” is some type of espionage thriller. It’ll be helmed by Tom Harper, who directed Felicity Jones in the hot air balloon adventure, “The Aernoauts,” as well as Jessie Buckley in the indie country musical, “Wild Rose.” Greg Rucka and Allison Schroeder will write the script. Pre-production has just started, hence the silence on any further details....

A report published by the Los Angeles Times noted that HFPA members were “routinely granted exclusive access to Hollywood power players, invited to junkets in exotic locales, put up in five-star hotels and, as Globes nominations near, lavished with gifts, dinners, and star-studded parties.” Such was the case with “Emily in Paris,” the production for which invited 33 HFPA members to Paris in 2019 and put them up at the Peninsula Paris hotel (rooms book for upwards of $1,400 a night) and treated them to a gala at the historic Musée des Arts Forains....
