An early cut of the 1977 film toggles between the space battle that kicks things off, as Princess Leia’s ship is captured by the Empire, and Luke Skywalker on the surface of the desert planet below, watching the battle unfold through his futuristic binoculars. He’s accompanied by his friend Biggs, recently returned from the Imperial Academy and about to join the Rebellion, and Camie and Fixer, two hayseed Tatooiners more interested in each other than in the action in the sky above....

That knack for clarity and continuity makes Carnahan an ideal fit for a time-loop movie. And “Boss Level,” a passion project he’s been developing since at least 2012, is a solid one. Frank Grillo stars as Roy, an ex-Special Forces badass so committed to tracking down evildoers in the line of duty that he neglected the one woman he really loved, a theoretical physicist named Jemma (Naomi Watts) in charge of a secret project, and their son together....

News first broke in February that Fincher would follow “Mank” with “The Killer,” an adaptation of Alexis Nolent’s graphic novel series of the same name. Michael Fassbender is starring in the lead role, playing a cold-blooded assassin who begins to have a psychological crisis. It’s hardly surprising that mobility for African Americans has always been restricted, from the days of slavery to Jim Crow America when “Sundown Towns” were a thing. “The Negro Motorist Green Book” became a necessary guide decades ago, and the focus on Black mobility continues in the form of recent stop-and-frisk laws in New York City that predominantly targeted Black people. Limitations on movement from before the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation has carried over, in different forms, into Reconstruction and beyond....
