Writers Guild Awards Screenplay Nominations Advance Oscar Contenders

The WGA maintains jurisdiction over whether scripts are produced under a Writer’s Guild contract, and who finally gets credit on a screenplay. (They do not cover most animated films, like this year’s Netflix Oscar contender, “The Mitchells vs. the Machines.”) The guild insists on withholding non-signatories from being part of the WGA Awards. A WGA nomination isn’t essential for Oscar nomination. Exceptions include American indie “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” Iranian Oscar-winner “A Separation” (whose director Asghar Farhadi was ineligible for “A Hero” this year,) Oscar-winning British films “Les Miserables,” and “The Favourite,” and all Pixar animated contenders, from “Up” to “Incredibles 2....

Writers Guild Awards Ted Lasso The Great Among Tv Nominees

AMC’s “Better Call Saul” nabbed four nominations, one in drama series and three in episodic drama, which recognizes scripts from individual episodes of the season. Of particular note from today’s WGA announcement is the notable achievement of both Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” and Hulu’s “The Great” scoring nominations in both new series and comedy series. Both freshman shows also earned a nomination apiece in episodic comedy. All the nominees will be celebrated at the joint 2021 Writers Guild Awards virtual ceremony, taking place on Sunday, March 21, 2021....

2022 Muahs Awards Cruella Coming 2 America Are Big Winners

While “Cruella” definitely has Oscar momentum for makeup and hair designer Nadia Stacey’s delightfully ’70s punk look for Emma Stone, the fact that the origin story split honors with “Being the Ricardos” — which isn’t even in the Oscar race — proves that it’s still an open race among the favored period contenders and dark horse “Coming 2 America.” “House of Gucci’s” unrecognizable Jared Leto as the balding, paunchy Paolo is very impressive, as is Best Actress nominee Jessica Chastain’s transformation as the legendary evangelist....

Ace Editing Awards Nominees Include Nomadland Mank Minari

The awards show will be held live on April 17 at 11:00 a.m. PT. Overlooked, though, were “News of the World” (edited by “Argo” Oscar-winner William Goldenberg) and “Tenet,” as well as three Black-led dramas, “Da 5 Bloods,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” and “One Night in Miami.” However, there’s still the possibility of one or two of these making the final Oscar nominations, along with the buzzy “Minari” and “Promising Young Woman....

After Arclight Losing Movie Theaters May Not Matter That Much

Here’s an alternative view: The Arclight was never my ideal theater. That’s not to cast aspersions on those for whom it was, or even on the Arclight itself. It’s because all the uniqueness and urgency that I treasured in moviegoing disappeared many decades before the Arclight opened in 2002. However, rather than shake my fist at those post-baby boomers who didn’t even know what they were missing, this is another kind of elegy....
