Spirits of the past feel right at home among Europe’s dense history and make great additions to a trippy comedy like “Atlanta” — especially ones that take the form of real characters, like Alfred’s random friend Lorraine (Ava Grey) who just happens to share a name with his late mother and sees through his pretense to the person underneath. But not all of Season 3’s ambitious choices were well received. Casual fans were frustrated by the relative scarcity of Earn (Donald Glover), Darius (LaKeith Stanfield), Alfred, and Van....

“Beauty and the Beast” meets online bullying in a hyper-modern anime riff on the classic fairy tale (or at least the Disney version of it), as “Miraï” director Mamoru Hosoda pushes his boundless imagination to new extremes in a visually dazzling musical about how J-Pop can save the world. If that seems like too much ground for a cartoon to cover in the span of a two-hour coming-of-age story, keep in mind that Hosoda has a knack for reaching familiar places in rivetingly unexpected fashions....

As anyone who follows the constantly changing lineups on each streaming service knows, digital media rights are fickle — the home for your favorite films can change from month to month. And even if you do own digital copies of some films, you could potentially not be able to access your purchases if your internet goes out, or, worse, if they become unavailable in the digital store through which you bought them....

The series first premiered in August 2019 and focuses on the titular city of Carnival Row, where mythological beings exist as oppressed refugees in a human-dominated social order. Bloom stars as Rycroft Philostrate, a detective in the city and a half-fae, who begins investigating a conspiracy involving a group of fae known as the Black Raven — one of whom is his former lover Vignette Stonemoss (Delevingne). Season 2 picks up where the first left off, with Rycroft off the force but still investigating a series of murders, while the Black Raven escalates their plans to protest oppression in the city....

According to The Hollywood Reporter: “In the hours immediately after the ceremony, neither China’s official mouthpiece The People’s Daily, state news service Xinhua nor the populist tabloid Global Times had produced a single report on Zhao’s multiple wins at the Academy Awards…One of the exceedingly rare pieces of coverage, on private news site 163.com, actually used the occasion of her victory as an opportunity to not-so-subtly assert one of China’s most important — and contentious — geopolitical priorities....

Production designer Ra Vincent spoke to IndieWire about building Stede’s ship, The Revenge, as a simplified, stage-ified vessel. Instead of using lots and lots of detailing in the set design and set dressing to make an image that looked so real viewers get sucked into the historical fiction, Vincent’s task was to create something that looked just real enough, but edit down any superfluous details. The Revenge convincingly evokes the show’s setting but also renders it a bit cartoonish and, crucially, harmless....

To be fair, that’s a low bar to clear at $67 million — the lowest for any April weekend in this century other than the past two Covid-affected ones. In terms of tickets sold (around 6 million), possibly the fewest for any weekend since the 1930s. “Doctor Strange” is expected to open to at least $150 million; $200 million is possible. Strong initial reaction to Paramount’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” both at CinemaCon and in early press screenings, suggest May could provide a one-two punch to launch a strong summer....
