The biggest opening of the year has hit its mark, but won’t exceed it. A 67 percent second weekend domestic drop, at the high end for comic book blockbusters, assures that. With $292 million in, look for it to easily surpass “The Batman,” currently at $369 million in U.S./Canada returns. …but only because it opened with $52 million more than the D.C. Comics’ hit. Matt Reeves’ blockbuster made $66.5 million its second weekend, off 50 percent....

“Black Widow” and “Cruella” are expected to follow suit in the coming months, but Disney+ availability looks a lot less threatening after the box-office success of “Godzilla vs. Kong,” which grossed $48.5 million — over 9 million tickets sold — even while available on HBO Max. In Canada, where most theaters are not yet open, it took in around $3 million U.S. as a PVOD offering. After several weeks at $19....

An action-horror hybrid film with social conscience notes and a biting sense of humor, “Black as Night” stars Asjha Cooper, Fabrizio Guido, Keith David, Mason Beauchamp, Frankie Smith, and Craig Tate. The film was directed by Maritte Lee Go. Taking place 15 years after Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans, “Black as Night” centers around Shawna (Cooper), a resourceful teenager who goes into battle against a group of deadly vampires posing a new threat that leaves its mark on the Big Easy — in the form of puncture wounds on the throats of the city’s vulnerable, displaced population....

After a tumultuous divorce from Amber Heard following domestic violence allegations, Depp is slated to portray King Louis XV in French director Maiwenn’s upcoming film, Variety reported. The film is produced by Pascal Caucheteux and Gregoire Sorlat’s Why Not Productions, with Wild Bunch International handling world sales. Production will begin in summer 2022, mainly set at the Versailles Palace. Though the movie’s title and plot have not yet been revealed, King Louis XV, who was nicknamed “the beloved,” ruled for almost 60 years before dying, after being accused of corruption....

When Paragon smashed in Blackstar’s brain, he broke my brain, too. The premiere of “Jupiter’s Legacy” ends exactly as expected: with a climactic battle between our newly introduced heroes and a seemingly unstoppable supervillain. Set high on a grassy hilltop safely away from innocent bystanders (and at sunset, of course), dozens of caped crusaders use their respective powers to put down a raging behemoth baddie by the name of Blackstar (Tyler Mane)....

Nah. Yesterday came word that “Killers of the Flower Moon” definitely won’t be released until 2023. Since distributors Apple and Paramount never gave the film a date, you can’t say that it was pushed — especially since Scorsese is renowned for his exacting editing processes. (Check out the video below that gives a taste of his working method with legendary collaborator, editor Thelma Schoonmaker.) Cannes 2023 now looks like a logical goal — that would make for a hell of an opening night — but Apple declined comment on its plans for the film....
