The news marks a significant return to film for Shakman, who previously directed the 2014 thriller “Cut Bank.” Shakman has primarily directed television shows in recent years and has worked on several of the industry’s highest-profile titles, including “Succession,” “Game of Thrones,” “The Boys,” “Billions,” and “Fargo.” Shakman also directed all nine episodes of Disney+’s recently-released “WandaVision,” which is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “WandaVision” is considered to be a large viewership draw for Disney+ and the show received positive reviews from critics when it premiered on the streaming service in January....

But the chances of “New Order” getting a wide release quickly sank when backlash began to emerge in Mexico in response to the trailer. Critics were quick to point out perceived racial stereotypes in the film, including that the uprisers were more dark-skinned than the lighter-skinned One Percent, and that the Black Lives Matter-inspired protesters in the film were glibly portrayed as one-note, violent monsters. Something got lost in Franco’s angry commentary about wealth disparity in Mexico — and the world....

“Before Season 1 even started, we just developed each character’s own style of Martial Arts,” Koda explained in an interview with IndieWire. “The complexity is where their progression was going — how much they were supposed to have improved and learned along those seasons.” According to Curfman, the cast’s willingness to train hard with the stunt coordinators has led to tremendous growth, with each performer blossoming at different points of the three season run....

To state the obvious, voters made their selection from a wide range of smaller-scale movies, given that many of the studio blockbusters, from Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” to Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune,” were pushed back due to the pandemic. Clearly, while stuck at home, many Academy voters were watching Netflix. That’s a huge advantage for “step one” on the road to an Oscar nomination: getting your movie seen.
