While the film — which follows McAdams and Jason Bateman as a couple whose weekly game night is turned upside down when real danger enters the picture — is packed with uproarious scenes and quotable lines, there’s one line reading in particular that still delights fans, four words that continue to pop up in online spaces as a perpetual fave. “Oh, no, he died!” McAdams’ Annie utters the line toward the end of the film, when one of many bad dudes who have been pursuing the game night pals is, well, no other way to put this, sucked into a jet engine....

The movie’s hypnotic power works in tandem with a simple narrative arc — a fallen king, the noble son rising from the ashes to set things right, the usual jam. The animation invites readymade comparisons to two earlier stalwarts of the genre, “Fantastic Planet” and “Yellow Submarine,” owing enough to those precedents that it may as well be conceived on a grid. At the same time, the movie radiates with a refreshing energy, pushing the boundaries of the animated form even by its own hallucinogenic standards....

That said, this weekend’s projection for Taika Waititi’s second Marvel Cinematic Universe entry “Thor: Love and Thunder” (Disney) is $150 million (+/- $10 million). Still, that could be off-target, both up and down. Any elevated expectations for the film come from, perhaps more than anything else, the unanticipated performance of “Top Gun: Maverick” (Paramount). Already over $575 million, the Tom Cruise-led sequel now looks like it will end at somewhere between $700-750 million domestic....

Netflix’s official synopsis for “Stowaway” reads: “On a mission headed to Mars, an unintended stowaway accidentally causes severe damage to the spaceship’s life support systems. Facing dwindling resources and a potentially fatal outcome, the crew is forced to make an impossible decision.” “I had never really read anything like it,” Collette recently told Entertainment Weekly about her decision to join the Netflix project (it’s her third high profile Netflix gig after “Unbelievable” and “I’m Thinking of Ending Things”)....

“These exceptional individuals will come together to offer a collaborative lens on our program,” said Sundance’s Director of Programming Kim Yutani in an official statement. “Their diverse personal perspectives can elevate work above the sum of its parts.” As previously announced, the jury for Alfred P. Sloan jury (comprised of Dr. Heather Berlin, Dr. Mandë Holford, PhD, Tenoch Huerta, Lydia Dean Pilcher, and Shawn Snyder) deliberated in advance of the festival and awarded the prize to “After Yang,” directed by Kogonada....

The Caped Crusader prequel series just was put on pause. “The Batman” writer-director Matt Reeves revealed during the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast on March 7 that the HBO Max spin-off series, tentatively titled “Gotham City P.D.,” is now shelved indefinitely. “One thing that we’re not doing that I was gonna do…So, there’s the Gotham police show, which, that one actually is put on hold. We’re not really doing that,” Reeves said....

The studio knew that Reeves accomplished this empathetic approach to the hero’s journey with the motion-captured gorilla Caesar (Andy Serkis) in Reeves’ two “Planet of the Apes” films. That was enought to make them believe Reeves could be entrusted with its most valuable and beloved piece of IP. But when it came time to time to face the blank page with co-writer Peter Craig, Reeves admits it was more daunting that usual....
